Wonder what happens behind the scenes of state test design? It turns out, the best practices used to build state standardized tests can help inform your development of incredible, high-quality classroom assessments! The Hawaiʻi State Department of Education’s Assessment Section will show you how our Hawaiʻi Authoring Program (HAP) item authoring and Performance Assessment Development Institute (PADI) workshops empower local educators to use those design principles to craft rigorous, valid, and culturally relevant tests for their own students.
In this session, we will model the type of activities we do in our workshops, especially when we fuse these gold-standard assessment design practices with the world of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools like Gemini or NotebookLM.
We will dive into a "Human-AI-Human" workflow, showing you exactly how teachers can use approved AI tools as a digital assistant for creating daily classroom assessments. We will also discuss ways in which you will need to spot "fluency bias"—where a polished, AI-generated question looks perfect but actually misses the mark on Hawaiʻi’s standards or local cultural contexts. You'll learn how to put your teacher-intuition in the driver's seat, using state assessment best practices to critique, hack, and elevate AI outputs for the classroom.
Whether you are a complex area specialist, an instructional coach, or a classroom teacher, you’ll walk away with practical strategies from our workshops. Join us to discover how to supercharge your assessment toolkit using AI tools, while keeping human heart, pedagogy, and local context right where they belong—at the center of your classroom!
