Design Thinking Hawaii's Design for Intelligence Lab empowers K–12 students to imagine and implement solutions to real‑world problems using artificial intelligence and human‑centered design. Over the past year, we have hosted two statewide competitions that challenged students to address school-based issues such as attendance, college & career readiness, disadvantaged students, and school inclusiveness. Teams from public High, Middle, and Elementary schools developed projects that combined design thinking and AI to create impactful prototypes. In this session, we will share the structure of our Design for Intelligence Lab, the judging criteria, and lessons learned from supporting diverse learners in hands‑on innovation challenges. Participants will explore how AI tools can be integrated with design thinking and project‑based learning to foster student agency, creativity, and community impact.
